About Me

20230212_232431.jpg

I grew up near Orpington in Kent and moved to West Sussex in 2001.

I now live in the lovely town of Hassocks with my teenage son. I am very grateful for the strong community here

as well as the beautiful location at the foot of the South Downs.

This is perfect for my love of hill walking and I am always exploring different parts of the South Downs or strolling

along one of the nearby beaches.

I trained in Aromatherapy massage in my early 20's, but didn't feel I had enough life experience to support the holistic nature of the work so continued my corporate career in Travel and Renewable Energy and gave massage to friends and family only during that time.

I experienced a chronic pain condition in my low back in my 40's and, as a result, was drawn back to bodywork with a specific interest in working with clients experiencing chronic pain conditions. This is where my massage journey really began!

I am really passionate about helping people get out of pain, move well and support their emotional and mental wellbeing.

Working with my head,

heart and hands!

Bio

I trained in Aromatherapy Massage with The Tisserand Institute back in the 90's, but didn’t follow a career in massage as I didn’t feel I had enough life experience at that time. Instead, I offered massage to my friends and family, while continuing a corporate career.

During lockdown, I decided to re-train, with a focus on treating people living with chronic pain.

After a lot of research, I discovered The Jing Institute of Massage & Complementary Medicine. Jing are based in Brighton and led by two incredible women and a talented team of teachers. They offer the highest level of massage training available in the UK and are highly regarded in the industry.

Here, I not only found a place in which to learn, grow and thrive, but have fun in the process and be inspired by the directors, teachers and fellow therapists and become part of supportive tribe.

So, my Jing journey began in 2021, where I completed an intensive 8 day course to bring my core massage skills up to date through Bodywork Beginnings, quickly followed by the Foundation in Advanced Clinical Massage and I was hooked.

Following a year of in-depth study and over 100 hours of clinical hands on practice, I completed my professional diploma in Advanced Clinical & Sports Massage with The Jing Institute of Massage & Complementary Medicine and am delighted to now be offering treatments to anyone experiencing chronic musculo-skeletal pain and / or restricted movement that is affecting daily activities and quality of life.

I have gone on to specialise in TMJ Dysfunction (temperomandibular joint) work related to head, neck and jaw pain, completed Hot Stone Fusion, which I use to support and enhance my clinical work as well as a beautiful standalone treatment for complete relaxion and most recently, Treating Caesarean and Mastectomy Scars using Myofascial Release.

Using The Jing Method™ along with the biopsychosocial model of pain, I combine my detailed anatomy knowledge, a listening touch and a warm and heart-centred approach to provide specific yet holistic treatments, considering both your physical and emotional needs.

Following a detailed consultation and range of movement assessment, I use a variety of safe and effective soft tissue techniques such as heat (using hot stones - optional), myofascial work, trigger point therapy, acupressure and stretching.

Treatment doesn’t end when you step away from the massage table either, as I will always offer tailored self-care techniques for you to use at home to enhance your recovery. I am totally committed to working alongside you to achieve your desired outcomes.

I love to learn and continue to develop my knowledge and skills  and can regularly be found attending training courses that enable me to reach more people in pain and those with more systemic & complex conditions.

Charlotte Griggs

“I’m sure Rachel has magic powers! She is so kind, gentle and empathic. I had a neck and back massage and it truly was the best I have ever had… It is abundantly clear from the start that Rachel really knows what she is talking about. Her anatomical knowledge and understanding of the mind-body connection is exceptional. I thoroughly recommend Rachel, whether you have chronic pain, an on-going condition, mild discomfort or you are just feeling a bit wobbly emotionally. She is an extremely gentle and safe pair of hands."

Clare Bell

"I can highly recommend Rachel, she is amazing! After a year of constant pain she treated my rotator cuff injury in six sessions! I wish I’d seen her sooner! I have also had the most wonderful Hot Stones massage which reduced tension and improved my sleep. I now see Rachel every month for a relaxing massage and it is the most important part of my self care routine! ☺️ Rachel is professional and incredibly knowledgeable whilst also offering a caring and compassionate approach."

Mandy Dale

“I  had an incredible deep tissue massage yesterday that was just amazing, it is what my mind and body needed. It feels amazing to be with Rachel who tuned into how I was feeling and what my body needed. The massage left me feeling relaxed and I slept so well, an added bonus was waking up this morning with a new sense of energy and I can only attribute this to the care I was given yesterday by Rachel. I have now asked my children to get me the hot stone for mother’s day :-) thank you Rachel for such a wonderful experience.”

FAQ's

Please contact me if you cannot find an answer to your question.

FAQ 1: What should I wear? What ever you feel comfortable in! For the massage itself you will be asked to undress to your underwear, females will be asked to remove their bra if their treatment involves the back or shoulders. You can always wait until you are on the couch to do this if that makes you feel more comfortable. Sports shorts are appropriate so long as they can be pulled up to access the top of the leg. If your treatment does not include legs then it will be up to you whether to keep your bottom half on, Rachel advises that if you do not have a soft or stretchy waist band then any belts should be removed and flies of trousers should be undone for comfort. Similarly if you are having a leg massage only you can opt to keep your top on if you wish. If you are having massage to your glutes (bum) muscles or the hips you will have a conversation about whether you are comfortable removing your underwear or not - you will only ever be asked this if it is relevant to your treatment. The choice will be yours and if you choose this option you will be draped appropriately to ensure your privacy and to keep everyone safe-guarded. There are options for massage of these areas to be done over the top of the towel, it is by no means mandatory. Your comfort and safety will always be my put first.
